One huge advantage of VueScan Pro is it had far more features than the standard version, often even more than the original driver for a scanner. As already pointed out, you can download a full-featured trial version. There is a bit of a steep learning curve but I feel it's worth the investment in time.
While I do not feel an Epson is worth saving (I detest Epson anything), if you are really happy with your Epson, I agree with absque fenestris and suggest downloading the free trial of Hamrick's VueScan.
